Steve Jobs and the impact of calligraphy on his lfe

Steve Jobs, CEO and co-founder of Apple Computer talks about his college experience and how a random calligraphy course had a major impact on a career he didn’t know he’d have. He talks about dropping out of college, foregoing those courses he really didn’t want to take and instead ‘drop-in’ on those that took his interest.  Most of which he stumbled into by sheer curiosity, that turned out to be invaluable several years later in his life.

Reed College at that time offered one of the best calligraphy instructions in the country.  The campus was littered with pamphlets, poster, labels on equipment etc.  As Steve had dropped out and wasn’t obligate to take the normal classes, he decided to take a calligraphy class to learn this art form.  Quote:  “I learnt about serifs and sans serifs typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letters and about what makes great typography great.  It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can’t capture and I found it fascinating.   None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life, but 10 years later when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me and we designed it all for the Mac” …

Southscribes Exhibition 'Inkspirations' 3 - 21 December 2011

Calligraphy is the Art of Beautiful Writing. This beautiful writing is what Calligraphy Southscribes, Inc will be exhibiting at their exhibition in December 2011 at the Hurstville City Museum & Gallery.

Calligraphy in the 21st Century is not only the traditional it also encompasses the modern thus commences the viewer’s artistic travel through the many scripts that members will display. The journey will begin with older style hands that have both historical and artistic value up until the modern mark making of today creating a different look and feel to calligraphy.

The artworks in Inkspirations: Playing with Pen and Ink are not only inspired by the tools or implements our artists use but also by words and how these words inspire us to produce our calligraphy.

This is the first time members of Calligraphy Southscribes, Inc. bring their work and love of calligraphy to the St George district in an exhibition and demonstration.

Calligraphy Southscribes was brought into being in March 1991 with a core of 36 people and has been providing lettering classes, specialised workshops, social activities and open fun afternoons for members and the public of the St. George and Sutherland Shire ever since.
Currently Calligraphy Southscribes, Inc. is the only operating calligraphy group south of the harbour.

The official opening of Inkspirations: Playing with Pen and Ink will be held on Saturday, 3 December 2011 at 2.00pm. All welcome.

This free exhibition will run until 22 December.

Christmas Lanterns

And so Christmas has come and gone, but not before our committee and members got together in November 2010 to get into the Christmas spirit and put their creative talents to use with the wonderful tutor Penny Laver to create Christmas Lanterns, which involved copious amounts of measuring, folding and sticking.  The end result; a rainbow of colours ready to hang.
